After years of work, construction set to begin on Seattle’s Africatown Plaza

A yearslong fight against gentrification of Seattle’s Central District will reach a milestone Saturday at the groundbreaking for Africatown Plaza, a seven-story affordable housing development on 23rd Avenue at East Spring Street.
“It’s another step toward maintaining and developing a future for the Black community that has called the Central District home for nearly 140 years,” said K. Wyking Garrett, president and CEO of Africatown Community Land Trust.
